Haiti Partnership
The Episcopal Diocese of Haiti is the largest diocese in the Episcopal Church of the United States. It is also one of the oldest; it was developed in 1868 by an American missionary, James Theodore Holly. The United States has maintained strong ties with the Diocese of Haiti throughout the years, and now more than ever our Haitian brothers and sisters in Christ need our support. The devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010 completely destroyed the infrastructure of the Episcopal Church in Haiti, leaving over 200,000 Episcopalians without the churches and the primary and secondary schools that have become the backbone of the nation.
Immediately after the earthquake, Bishop Dan Edwards authorized a Haiti Relief Effort Team here in Nevada. In the past several months, the team has developed a formal partnership with St. Luc’s Mercerie, Leogane, one of the churches destroyed in the earthquake. St. Luc’s has over 400 registered families and approximately 260 children, ages 3-16, registered in its primary and secondary schools.
The Haiti Relief Effort Team is working closely with the priest in charge and vestry of St. Luc’s to keep the school children fed and provide a small stipend for each of the nine teachers. The health and education of these Episcopal school children is critical to their future and the future of Haiti.
